Restaurants add new menu items using the superfood through June.
There few things San Diegans like more than avocados. So it’s no surprise that The Golden State even has its own unofficial holiday honoring the superfood: California Avocado Month.
To celebrate, the California Avocado Commission — yes, that’s a real thing — has teamed up with Little Italy Food Hall to honor the beloved fruit. All six restaurants stationed in the culinary collective, as well as the food hall’s bar, will present a menu item that incorporates a state-sourced avocado throughout the month.
Starting June 1, Ambrogio15 offers Pizza Avocado Alla Mediterranea, Roast Meat and Sandwich Shop serves a Roasted Salmon & California Avocado Bowl, Mein St. Asian Kitchen introduces a Seasoned Sushi Rice Bowl dressed with California Avocado-Cilantro Sauce, and Wicked Maine Lobster puts a twist on the standard B.L.T. with a Lobster B.L.T.C.A. sandwich.
Sam Zein (aka Sam The Cooking Guy) of Not Not Tacos add two dishes to his selection: Pearl Couscous with California Avocado and Crispy Tofu, and California Avocado and Crag Flatbread with garlic aioli.
“What I really love about California avocados is the delicious versatility,” Zein said in a press release. “Whether I’m enjoying a simple halved avocado with nothing but salt and pepper or preparing a sophisticated dish, they allow so much possibility thanks to their creamy texture and unmistakable flavor.”
After dining, indulge in dessert at Bobboi Natural Gelato and order California Avolicious Gelato, featuring green apple, carrot juice and ginger, or opt for a cocktail at Little Italy Food Hall Bar with its California Avocado Margarita.
Little Italy Food Hall is situated in the neighborhood’s public square, Piazza della Famiglia. Its doors are open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday with hours extended to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
