We’re not sure who came up with this vexing paradox, but summer is both bathing suit and peak ice cream-eating season.

So if you’re going to indulge, make it count. And make it Stella Jean’s.

The 8-month-old sister scoop shop of University Heights’ Pop Pie Co. features a creative lineup of flavors and small-batch production using local ingredients. We loved each of the six varieties we tasted, with the Earl Grey + Citrus Tea Cake and the vegan Mango Sticky Rice as the standouts.

Among the delicate and not-too-sweet flavors, five a day are vegan, all surprisingly creamy. And if you try to save calories by ordering your ice cream in a cup, you’d be missing out on the best waffle cone any of us had ever tasted; the vegan cone is made with brown sugar and maple syrup.
