Take it to the tap in Vista.
Go: Belching Beaver Pub 980
Know: Squirreled away in nondescript business park, Belching Beaver’s original brewery reopened two years ago as an outdoors-themed outpost.
Boho: There’s a retro-cool vibe to Pub 980’s outdoor patio, where recycled log chairs are arrayed around fire rings. Or take shelter indoors, where redwood burl tables sidle up to the bar and kitchen, which operate out of an ersatz Airstream trailer.
Nouveau: Brewed with just-harvested hop cones, Ride the Pine (7.4 percent alcohol by volume, $9 per pint) is an excellent fresh hop beer, offering herbal hop character without much bitterness. The beer equivalent of a Beaujolais nouveau, it was a bracing accompaniment to our party’s chili lime chicken wings ($5 for five), pulled pork sandwich ($10), fried Brussels sprouts ($14) and beer-battered fries ($2).
Pro: You’ll find some of this busy Beaver’s most unusual offerings here – this is where the brewery makes its barrel-aged sour beers.
