Beer of the week: The Heiress from Societe Brewing Company
Beer Name: The Heiress
Brewery: Societe Brewing Company
Style: Czech-style Pilsner
ABV: 5.3%
Beloved by craft beer drinkers for their consistently elevated quality since 2012, Societe is an award-winning brewery that offers an impressive range of tantalizing styles. From Out West hoppy ales and Belgian-inspired Old World brews to Stygian dark ales and wine-barrel aged Feral sours, Societe brings a bygone vibe with its personality based monikers, including The Roustabout, The Dandy, The Madam and The Pugilist. The brewery’s unyielding allegiance to quality and flavor has made them a local favorite with international notoriety and a truly classic San Diego craft beer brewery.
What’s with the name? The Heiress scored its name from its inheritance of The Harlot recipe (the brewery’s Belgian blonde/pilsner blend), and as heir to the lager legacy alongside The Baroness Helles Lager and The Mistress Hoppy Pilsner.
What’s in it? Primarily pilsner malt and Saaz hops.
What to expect: Chief Marketing Officer Brandon Hernandez calls this one “a classic Bohemian pilsner. Refreshing and effervescent, it’s earthy and floral with a clean, bitter finish. It’s the perfect beer for fans of traditional pilsners ... and for converting people whose only reference point for pilsners are the adjunct versions sold 24 to a box.”
The perfect pairing? For this beer, Hernandez recommends, “With its tiny bubbles and cleansing qualities, The Heiress is a cinch when it comes to spicy foods, particularly hot Thai curries.” (Already a Societe fan? Check out more pairings on the website for each and every one of the brewery’s beers).
This beer gal’s take: The Heiress screams for warm weather, with its crisp and refreshing mouthfeel. With San Diego’s paradisiacal climate, this beer is good year-round, but is especially perfect for slaking thirsts on sunny spring and summer days, at BBQs, and for post-workout refreshment. This is an unbeatable cross-over for macro beer drinkers if ever there was one.
Where to get it and for how long: The Heiress was recently added to Societe’s core beers, and is available year round on tap and in growlers and crowlers at the brewery.
Extra juicy tidbit: Keep your eyes peeled for the rotating “The Journeyman” releases, the latest addition to the popular wild and funky Feral series. New single-barrel beers are unveiled the first Monday of each month. But get there fast, because with only two kegs available each round, it will go before you can say Societe. Look for the next release, Monday, May 6.
