Tilted Kilt sports bar exits San Diego

Just two months after closing in Mission Valley, the Tilted Kilt has shuttered its only remaining location in San Diego, just steps from Petco Park.

The Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery, which opened in East Village in 2008, relied heavily on its proximity to the ballpark for business, but in the intervening years the Celtic-themed sports pub also faced growing competition from a number of new eateries and bars catering to sports-viewing enthusiasts.

Representatives of the Tilted Kilt franchisee declined to comment on the closure, but it comes just a few months after the building in which it was a tenant — DiamondView East Village on 10th Avenue — was sold to Divco West Real Estate Services, a private real estate investment firm based in Boston and San Francisco.

In a statement, the Tilted Kilt sports pub chain referenced the new ownership, but declined to elaborate further on the closing.

“The location of the downtown San Diego franchised Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery is under new landlord management and the management company will be utilizing the space for another business,” the company said. “The Tilted Kilt Franchisee will be focusing its efforts on its Tilted Kilt Franchise in Temecula, California.”

A spokesman for Divco West said that the company would not comment on Tilted Kilt’s exit from the DiamondView property.

When the Mission Valley Tilted Kilt closed its doors in Mission Valley in early September, the company attributed the bar’s departure to “changing demographics and customer base associated with the exit of the San Diego Chargers.”
