I Love Poke brings island eats to San Diego

Share

Six years in the making, the I Love Poke tasting event and competition returns to Bali Hai on Tuesday, May 26. The outdoor affair honoring Hawaii and its signature seafood dish poke (pronounced poh-kay) is one of the most popular of the year, bringing foodies and chefs together for one delicious day.

What’s poke? The dish is typically a raw salad of fish prepared a number of ways, like with seaweed, soy sauce or onion. At the tasting, guests can gorge on poke samplings from returning champs Chef Kurt Metzger from Kitchen 4140, Chef Keoni Simmons from Sushi on a Roll, Chef Dion Morales of Bali Hai, Chef Alvanette Pacheco from Specialty Produce and more.

Beyond the poke, other island-inspired bites will be served from 15 San Diego restaurants such as Puesto’s kalbi kimchi tacos and Ohana Café’s teriyaki chicken and coconut rice dish.

Food-focused judges will crown one poke champion, while live music from Loa Greyson entertains guests at the Bali Hai’s waterfront setting.
