Hot on the summer menu


With temperatures rising, San Diego restaurants are releasing some hot new dishes on their menus to help cool down.

Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar has added a new beer and three new summer bites to its menu. The Huckleberry Haze IPA offers a fresh twist with notes of huckleberry, tropical fruit, citrus and hints of strawberry. New dishes include grilled artichokes, steamed with lemon and herbs and served with house-made roasted garlic tahini (toasted ground hulled sesame seeds); mini corn dogs, Nathan’s natural all-beef hot dogs, corn-battered dipped, fried to order and served with a house-made IPA mustard; and chili peanut wings caramelized in pineapple juice, fish sauce, lime, jalapeños, garlic, ginger, chili flakes, sesame seeds, crushed peanuts and cilantro. Claim Jumper Restaurant & Saloon in the Carmel Mountain Plaza now offers breakfast on weekends. New items, such as sriracha candied bacon and s’mores pancake, a fluffy buttermilk chocolate chip pancake with marshmallows and chocolate fudge; and carrot cake French toast topped with Mandarin oranges, toffee pecans and cream cheese frosting, are two of the morning offerings you’ll find on the menu. 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday.

Primavera Ristorante welcomes the warmer weather with fresh dishes like prosciutto e melone, sliced seasonal melon with imported prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella ($18) and pasta alla checca, fresh vine tomatoes, basil, garlic and ricotta salata atop capellini pasta ($24). A new cocktail, Coronado Cooler ($14), a combination of watermelon vodka, muddled cucumber, limoncello and grapefruit juice, is also available.

Puesto’s pastry chef Jessica Scott has crafted a new secret menu item: Tequila Watermelon Guava Paletas in non-alcoholic flavors, including strawberry, guava, banana mango and pineapple nopales mint. Each paleta is paired with a sniffer glass of chamoy, a Mexican sweet and spicy sauce. The paletas are available through the end of summer.

Snooze, an A.M. Eatery has launched its new summer menu featuring a lemon poppy seed buttermilk pancake, a smashed avocado Benny and four refreshing cocktails, including the Snooze Summer Shandy, made with gin, fresh lemon, ginger brew and craft Belgian-style wheat beer. The menu is available for a limited time only.

Fat Sal’s has unveiled its new Fat Breakfast Sandwich. Priced at $12.99, the butter-grilled bread is filled with fried eggs, ham, crisp bacon, breakfast sausage, Mozzarella sticks, melted American cheese, tater tots, ketchup and Tapatio sauce for spice.
