Hard Rock Cafe in downtown closing at end of year
The Hard Rock Cafe, a presence in downtown San Diego since 1998, will be closing by the end of the year, but the ownership is offering no explanation for the impending closure.
A statement from Hard Rock International, which owns the cafe, offered the promise of a revived cafe but in a different location. The restaurant will close Dec. 31, the statement says.
“San Diego is an important market for Hard Rock International and we are committed to our presence in the market with the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego,” said the statement, released over the weekend. “We are actively exploring other opportunities and expect to bring the cafe back to the area at the right time and in a new great location.”
Samantha Casale, a public relations representative for the hotel, said she could not offer any more information beyond the formal statement.
Located on Fourth Avenue, several streets north of the Hard Rock Hotel, the cafe is known for its collection of memorabilia from notable rock performers.
Among the collectibles adorning the walls of the San Diego cafe are a vintage fabric tank top worn by Gwen Stefani on No Doubt’s 1996 -1997 Tragic Kingdom world tour, a Gibson Les Paul Joe Perry Model Guitar signed by all the members of Aerosmith, and a boxing glove used on stage as a prop by Sugar Ray.
The restaurant serves casual American fare and on Friday nights, it features live acoustic rock in the early evening, plus DJ’s later into the evening.
