Battle of the best tacos goes down tomorrow
Prepare for the ultimate Taco Tuesday-the Taco TKO Competition, one of the San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival’s signature events, is going down on November 17. The event moves to a new location this year at Quartyard San Diego in East Village.
“Guests help decide who will take away the title of Best Fish Taco in San Diego while satisfying their palates with a boatload of tacos and beer-does it get more San Diego than that?” said Michelle Metter, co-producer of the festival. “Everyone has their favorite fish taco joint, and the debate of who really makes the best fish taco inspired the Taco TKO.”
Sandbar Sports Grill will be going for their third straight victory this year, but they’ll face stiff competition from the likes of The Blind Burro, PB Fish Shop, Don Chido, The Promiscuous Fork, City Tacos, Ironside Fish & Oyster, Puesto, Parq, O Organic Food Truck and more. “The competition will definitely by heated this year as restaurants are pulling out all the stops,” Metter said. She hinted that Puesto’s entry will be made with squid ink tortillas and Ironside will use both octopus and chorizo-and these are just a few of the creative fish tacos guests will sample.
The winner of $1,000, a trophy and bragging rights will be chosen by attendees during the walk-around tasting, but celebrity chefs will get to weigh in as well. Chef Chad White of Comun Kitchen and James Beard-award winning Chef Gale Gand of Spritz Burger in Chicago will put themselves through the arduous task of sampling and judging every entry.
All the tacos will be specially paired with a complementary beer and the event will feature 12 beer stations. “Taco TKO really is the ultimate Taco Tuesday celebration,” Metter said.
The San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival showcases the world’s premiere wine and spirits producers, chefs, culinary personalities and gourmet foods. From November 16-22, over 100 events throughout the city will feature 60 chefs, 150 wineries, breweries and spirit companies, 70 restaurants and 30 gourmet food companies. The Taco TKO Competition stands out because “it provides an authentic San Diego taste at an affordable price all foodies can appreciate,” said Michelle Metter, co-producer of the Festival.
The showdown is on Tuesday, November 17 from 6 - 9 p.m. at Quartyard San Diego.
Tickets are $45 and inclusive of all food and beer. To purchase tickets or see a complete schedule of San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival events, visit sandiegowineclassic.com
