3 savory pies to try on Pi Day

Today is March 14, aka 3.14, which means it officially Pi Day! To celebrate the occasion, we have gathered some of our very favorite pies (get it?) of the savory variety around San Diego that we recommend noshing on, pronto. These go-to pies a great for when you’re craving something flaky and gooey - but not too sweet.

Green hog & cheese pot pie from Pop Pie Co.

Pop Pie makes a variety of pies, including hearty vegan recipes, breakfast pies and meat-based pies. Our go-to is the green hog and cheese pie from Pop Pie Co. The magical creation is filled with pork shoulder braised in tomatillo sauce with a blend of roasted pasilla, serrano and jalapeno chiles in jack cheese.

4404 Park Blvd., University Heights.

Shepherd’s pie from Ritual Kitchen & Beer Garden

If you’re itching for a different kind of pie, give Ritual Kitchen & Beer Garden a go. The quaint restaurant offers up a signature shepherd’s pie that is unique and incredibly tasty. It’s made with natural lamb and beef, plus seasonal, organic vegetables - all topped with mashed potatoes. For those who are vegan or perhaps looking for a healthier option of pie, opt for the hard-to-find-elsewhere vegan shepherd’s pie. Also served at Ritual, it is made with organic vegetables and tofu, and also topped with vegan mashed potatoes.

4095 30th St., North Park.

Pi Bar

One of the newest restaurants in Liberty Station (it replaced Mess Hall inside Liberty Public Market), Pi Bar is cooking up some delectable sandwiches, pizzas and even (and most importantly, in our opinion) pie! Try the baked chicken and mushroom pot pie made with hearty chicken chunks, carrots, gravy and mushrooms. Pi Bar also just started serving a breakfast pie that is proving to be our second favorite option made with baked with bacon, potato, onion and fontina cheese. Yes, please to both!

2820 Historic Decatur Rd., Liberty Station.
