Even though January is associated with the phrase “New Year, new you” and fitness crazes around every corner, sweet treats shouldn’t completely get kicked to the curb.
That’s the thinking behind Salt & Straw’s Vegan New Year menu. The new specialty ice cream shop, now open in Little Italy, will serve five limited-edition flavors conceived by head ice cream maker Tyler Malek from Jan. 5 through Feb. 1.
The flavor combinations will include some ingredients from local companies, including Modern Times Beer, while remaining 100% vegan. The following lineup will be served alongside Salt & Straw’s traditional blends.
Happy Birthday Elvis: Banana coconut ice cream with swirls of marionberry jam, peanut butter fudge, and bits of candied coconut that Salt & Straw says tastes just like bacon. Enjoy it all month, or specifically on Elvis’ birthday, which is Jan. 8.
Mint Chip Whoopie Pie: This rich coconut ice cream is mixed with chocolate and pure peppermint oil from Washington’s Seely Farm., then pieces of homemade Whoopie Pies are stirred in.
Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge: This creation combines hazelnut milk and hazelnut butter with salt, sugar and cocoa powder, plus homemade gluten-free brownie pieces.
Candied Mango Faux-yo: Frozen yogurt using coconut cream, yep, that’s happening. The faux-yo combines sugar, mango puree, salt, vanilla and a little green cardamom, with pieces of candied mango for a taste that’s similar to fresh-fruit sorbet.
Modern Times’ Hopped Orange Creamsicle: According to a release, “When Salt & Straw tasted Modern Times’ barrel-aged Thermometer Island sour saison with cara cara and blood orange, they knew they had to make it into ice cream.” This blend combines the beer with blood orange juice, rosewater and some extra hops.
