Power to the pi(e)


“In pie we crust” is the motto on the wall at University Heights restaurant Pop Pie Co. Come March 14, the restaurant is putting its crust in the hands of other chefs in celebration of Pi Day.

San Diego chefs Hanis Cavin (Pioneer BBQ), Andy Harris (Grand Ole BBQ y Asado), Brandon Zanavich (The Friendly) and Sergio Garcia (Chicano Soul Food) help fans pig out. Cavin’s pie will be The Porchetta Shack (in honor of his former role at Carnitas Snack Shack), Harris will bring his Smoke BBQ Pulled Pork Mac ‘n’ Cheese Pot Pie, Zanavich will have a pot pie take on his Dirty Flat Top Cheese Burger and Garcia will provide balance with a Vegan Guisado Pot Pie.

The day’s festivities start at 8 a.m. with a number of specials, including free hand pies for the first 50 people in line — swag will also go to the first 30 — and $3.14 local craft beer pints all day with a Fall Brewing tap takeover.

Also of note, Pop Pie Co. is spreading its wings and will open a second location in the coming months in Ocean Beach.
