A BBQ Championship is coming to Del Mar

Okay, San Diego. We know that you aren’t particularly spoiled with quality BBQ, which is what makes this sunny, post-race event one that you don’t want to miss. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will be hosting the first Del Mar BBQ State Championship following opening weekend at the races on Sunday, July 17.

The outdoor BBQ fest, taking place at the Seaside Concert Area at the Del Mar Racetrack, will offer attendees the taste of over 50 different BBQ dishes from various BBQ pit-masters and local chefs and restaurants. The public can vote for their favorite BBQ option after tasting the delicious meats, one of which will be awarded the People’s Choice Champion award.

Some of the competition styles include brisket, pork, ribs, chicken and steak. The dishes and be purchased from 1 to 5 p.m.

Local craft beer will be on tap to pair with your samples. There will also be live music to groove to while you grub down on quality BBQ.

The winner of this competition will be rewarded over $15,000 in cash prizes and awards from Kansas City Barbecue Society and, of course, bragging rights. The dishes will be reviewed through a blind-judge system and with a weighted scoring index to determine the most deserving and talented BBQ-master.

Admission to the event is free with racetrack admission. Pre-sale tickets are available for $14 and include race track admission, four BBQ samples and a People’s Choice voting ballot; VIP pre-sale tickets are $25 and offer the same pre-sale ticket perks, plus early entrance to the competition at noon.
