Undistributed beer of the week: The Cake is a Lie

The Cake Is A Lie by Intergalactic Brewing (Liz Bowen)

There can only be one undistributed beer of the week. The competition is fierce in San Diego’s beer community, but someone has to take the title. This week’s best undistributed beer is...

Intergalactic Brewing: The Cake is a Lie

Style: Coffee Cream Ale

ABV: 7%

Pair with: Pecan pie or pork tenderloin

The super-sweet, milky aspect of this brew lingers, giving way to a semi-smooth mouth feel. The roasted coffee is not dark nor bitter, but still noticeable. Its taste is comparable to that of a blonde roast coffee. This Intergalactic creation is super drinkable and light bodied with a subtle vanilla aftertaste.

This coffee-style brew comes to us from Anthony Fusco, lead brewer at Intergalactic Brewing. Fusco had been seeing what is known as a “blond stout” around our local community and nationwide. He saw folks at Noble and Mike Hess brewing up some deliciously sweet coffee beers. Intergalactic’s first take at the beer style was a 9% ABV version of their now lighter, more drinkable 7% beer. The lower ABV style of the brew won a silver medal at the 2015 LA International Beer Competition, prompting Intergalactic to proceed with making the well-liked beer. The Cake is a Lie utilizes a variety of different coffee brands, both local and national, but tends to stick with Kona Coffee and a special vanilla coffee blend. These coffee choices both combine well with the sugary-aspects of the added lactose and crystal malt flavorings.
