There can only be one undistributed beer of the week. The competition is fierce in San Diego’s beer community, but someone has to take the title. This week’s best undistributed beer is...

Toolbox Brewing: Life Gose On

Style: Gose

ABV: 4.8%

Pair with: smoked salmon or goat cheese

This traditional gose-style beer is enhanced with just a smidgen of sea salt, helping to round out its super tart taste.

This selection comes from Toolbox Brewing’s brewer, Ehrin Schmidt, who wanted to create an easy-drinking boat-beer for San Diegans. The light, refreshing gose-style beer is made to mimic a traditional German beer. The addition of sea salt provides a tiny bit of salinity that is standard in German beers, which use a saltier water in the brew process. Schmidt wanted to work with a local salt vendor, so utilized La Jolla Sea Salt to give the lemon-like, tart flavor a more traditional flare. Coriander is also a commonly used herb for this style of beer, which pairs nicely with the sea salt, giving a noticeable boost of flavor.
