Undistributed beer of the week: Here’s Your Damn Stout

Share

There can only be one undistributed beer of the week. The competition is fierce in San Diego’s beer community, but someone’s gotta take the title. This week’s best undistributed beer is...

Benchmark Brewing: Here’s Your Damn Stout

ABV: 10 %

Style: Imperial Stout

Pair with: Aged cheese, dried figs and salted nuts or chocolate cake.

This dark, roast-y, boozy beer is a fall classic in the making. It’s full of chocolate flavor and heavy, with a bittersweet finish and lingering cherry notes.

The story behind this craft selection routes back to Matt Akin, brewmaster and co-owner of Benchmark Brewing. Akin is a former Alesmith head brewer who helped in crafting the massively popular Speedway Stout. Akin had said that he was no longer going to focus on those super-dark stouts, swearing he would stick to beers that you can drink a few of like oatmeals, table beers, blonde ales and IPAs, which make up most of Benchmark’s lineup of brews. He eventually gave in after dealing with the public constantly questioning, “Where’s the stout?!” Thus, the title of the beer was born. This delicious brew will be available on tap throughout the duration of San Diego Beer Week.
