Undistributed beer of the week: Coffee Porter

Editor’s Note: Undistributed beer of the week is a series that profiles a local brew only available to try on draft at specific locations in San Diego for a limited time.

There can only be one undistributed beer of the week. The competition is fierce in San Diego’s beer community, but someone has to take the title. This week’s best undistributed beer is....

Style: Porter

ABV: 5.8%

Pair with: cheesecake or roasted red meats

The coffee is strong with this one. The rich flavor of dark coffee and vanilla is upfront in this medium-bodied brew, with accompanying roasted malt undertones. This beer has a creamy mouthfeel and a dry finish with lingering notes of dates, maple and chocolate.

This beer comes to us from Mitch Wix, brewer at Culture Brewing Co. in Ocean Beach. Wix said that the brew was meant to be reminiscent of a dark porter that you might find an 18th century bar-goer in London drinking. The beer is dark, toasty and meant to warm us up as we experience some semblance of a winter here in San Diego, he said. The coffee porter is stronger than a standard “coffee-flavored” porter might taste, and I wondered why this could be.

Wix relayed that the beer is made with a “super secret dark roast” cold-brew blend, which tends to prevail stronger than your average coffee-blend in terms of strength and bitterness. The coffee grounds were steeped in the beer after it was finished for 36-hours. The outcome was a deeper coffee flavor which brings out the notes of dates, chocolate, maple and vanilla. This beer is available for a limited time on tap at Culture Brewing Co. in Ocean Beach.
