Kilowatt Brewing: Coconut Chai Porter

The nose on this brew is not subtle; it’s all strong, cinnamon-scented chai. The chai flavor is complimented by malty, roasted flavors and an added taste of caramel and chocolate. The toasted coconut is also quite prevalent, yet it is surprisingly smooth when blended with all the flavor complexities of this stellar beer.
This slow-brewed beer comes to us from Kilowatt co-owner, Rachel Fischer. Fischer has been a long-time lover of craft beer and as an owner, felt it was time to learn about the process of brewing a specialty beer, firsthand. Kilowatt’s head brewer, Chris Calva, helped her get the basics of the process down, while she worked on her first recipe. The coconut and chai tea lover within Fischer compelled her to make this sweet-meets-spicy, drinkable porter. The beer, which is brewed in small three barrel batches, was released at Kilowatt’s soft opening and had an overwhelmingly great response from guests. Fischer began to enjoy developing more unique and interesting recipes for the brewery and continues to take part in many of Kilowatt’s specialties.
Pro tip: If you like a strong flavor of coconut, try to get this beer when it’s fresh and just tapped as the coconut tends to mellow into the chai flavors over time. This beer is available on tap for a limited time at Kilowatt Brewing.
