Go: Julian

Know: Avoid fall’s Apple Days crush and instead take a mid-summer drive into the mountains to enjoy this charming town’s zesty beer scene.

Crow: Opened in 2013, Nickel Beer allows Tom Nickel — an award-winning brewer whose resume includes stints with Oggi’s and Pizza Port — full freedom for his beer-making talents.

Julian Beer Co., which recently reopened after an extensive remodel, is the brainchild of Vince Marsaglia, co-founder of craft beer powerhouse Pizza Port.

Pro: Scenic but low-key, Julian is a great town for walking. The 0.8-mile stroll between these two breweries takes you straight through the heart of the historic downtown.

Whoa!: What goes around comes around, beer division: Julian Beer Co. is about a block from the Julian Pioneer Museum, 2811 Washington St., once home to Peter Mayrhoffer’s 19th century brewery.
