Intergalactic has out-of-this-world triumph in beer contest

Share

Results of last month’s Los Angeles International Commercial Beer Competition read like a sci-fi script, “Intergalactic Captures L.A.”

Miramar’s Intergalactic Brewing Co. stomped through Smog City, four of its beers taking gold medals: Space Oasis Coconut Porter (in the field beer category), Galactoberfest (German-style Maerzen), Gold Leader (English-style summer ale) and Alpha Mensae (other Belgian-style).

AleSmith won three golds with Horny Devil (Belgian-style strong specialty ale), Nut Brown Ale (brown porter) and Anvil ESB (extra special bitter).

New English came away with two golds: Pacific Storm Stout (classic Irish-style dry stout) and Brewers Special Brown Ale (English-style brown ale).

Other San Diego breweries striking gold in L.A.: J. & L. Eppig, Belching Beaver, Mike Hess, Coronado, Kilowatt, Resident, Pizza Port Bressi Ranch, Legacy, Karl Strauss, Indian Joe, Council, Ballast Point and Pizza Port.

The complete list of L.A. winners, including all 60 nabbed by San Diego County breweries, is on Fairplex’s website.

Locals also triumphed in the San Diego International Beer Festival, whose winners were announced last week. AleSmith was named the 2017 champion brewery, an honor it had captured in 2015.

AleSmith also took two golds (Private Stock Ale, British-style strong ale category; and Old Numbskull, Barley Wine); as did Bagby Beer (Sweet Ride, Pilsener; and Three Beagles Brown, English-style brown ale); and Duck Foot (London Calling, porter; and Black Leprechaun, specialty stout).

Also taking gold were beers from J & L Eppig, Belching Beaver, Rip Current, Karl Strauss, Council, North Park, Prohibition, Mason Ale Works, Finest Made, Burgeon, Mother Earth, Dos Desperados, Pizza Port Ocean Beach, Resident, Barrel Harbor, Pizza Port Carlsbad and Mike Hess. Newtopia Cyder won in a cider category.

The full list is on the San Diego International Beer Festival website. That’s also where you can buy tickets ($55-$110) to sample these beers during the San Diego County Fair, June 16-18.
