Beer of the week: Good Guy from Booze Brothers Brewing Co.

Share

Beer Name: Good Guy

Brewery: Booze Brothers Brewing Co.

Style: Pale Ale

ABV: 5.2 %

Nestled in a business park in Vista, this brewery jewel has a reclaimed, outdoorsy-meets industrial vibe. Complete with a back patio adorned with draping fauna of green and blooms, an indoor and outdoor bar, and a wedding space, Booze Brothers is a sensory surprise from entrance to exit. The space keeps 15 beers on tap at all times, and houses both the flagship Booze Brothers line along with their experimental fruited beer project, Owl Farm. The BB Good Guy Pale Ale is the brewery’s longest running packaged beer, twice as old as the popular Buena Vista IPA.

What’s with the name? The DL on the Booze Brothers name dates to the brewery’s garage homebrewing days, when the founders were known by that moniker. The Good Guy name came from a friend who suggested it, and in case you were wondering about the Owl Farm name, it refers to the place in Colorado where Hunter S. Thompson did a good deal of his writing.

The hop lowdown: Good Guy Pale Ale is a blend of Mosaic, Belma and Citra hops. While Mosaic and Citra are familiar to San Diegans, the lesser known Belma offers up notes of orange, melon, pineapple and grapefruit to the hop mix.

The insider view: “Mr. Manager” Kris Anacleto tells PACIFIC Good Guy “is not a traditional pale ale. It’s an aggressively hopped beer that teeters on the border of pale ale and IPA, and leans toward IPA. It’s the staff go-to beer.”

This beer gal’s take: Set at a perfectly positioned ABV for day drinking, this beer is a juicy explosion of Vista sunshine and cool breezes delivered through citrus hops and crisp refreshment. Put this on your list for potential summer crusher beers that is a thumbs up every time.

Where can I get it and for how long? As a core beer in the Booze Brothers lineup, this beer is available on tap and in cans at the brewery and at major stores and bottle shops around San Diego.
