Rum on over: Catamaran to serve an exclusive spirit

Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa in Mission Bay is collaborating with San Diego-based distiller, Malahat Spirits Co., to bring a Rum Social series to spirits enthusiasts.

The collaboration was the brain child of Jono Tapp, the director of Outlets at the Catamaran. His previous experience with spirits and his personal affinity for them yielded Tapp to reach out to the local distiller.

For Tapp, spirits are like bottled time machines — the smell can bring one back to a particular time in their lives. Through this collaboration, he wants Catamaran guests to “build memories with spirits.”

“Feel transcended from basically all of San Diego to this tropical paradise (at the Catamaran),” said Tapp.

Tapp and the owners of Malahat Spirits Co. spent a year developing everything from the spirit to the cocktails featured during hotel events.

The hotel will host three events at the Oceana Coastal Kitchen, with each one highlighting an exclusive Malahat cocktail.

The first event, on June 6, will showcase the Barrel-Aged Mai Tai, a cocktail mixed with vanilla and cinnamon-infused rum.

Each ticket will include two Catamaran rum drinks and small plate pairings of deviled chicken with pancetta, short rib on toasted brioche, shrimp cocktail with a Malahat-infused dipping sauce and strawberry tiramisu.

There’s good news for those who cannot make the event but want to get a taste of the rum; the exclusive collab will be available indefinitely at the hotel’s two restaurants, Oceana Coastal Kitchen and Moray’s.

Try the vanilla and cinnamon-infused rum or the citrus and zest-focused rum.

Tickets to the Rum Social Series can be purchased online. The event on June 6 runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
