Saving the world, one drink at a time
Even a superhero gets thirsty, right? Whether you are lurching in the Zombie Walk, saving San Diego as Captain America, or breaking a sweat in a Pokemon costume, you will want to keep in character even with your cocktails. Here are some of our best local spots for Comic-Con themed drinks:
The Smoking Outlander, Bleu Bohème
Paying tribute to the Starz series “Outlander” (set in France), Kensington’s Bleu Bohème offers this cocktail made with Johnnie Walker Black Label, La Muse Verte Absinthe, Peychaud’s bitters and vermouth, served on the rocks and garnished with a smoking lemon twist-wrapped rosemary sprig.
Beer is the Path to the Dark Side, Bankers Hill Bar + Restaurant
The reference is clear on this Star Wars-themed cocktail with Genepy des Alpes liqueur, fresh lime juice, house-made pineapple gum syrup, house-made cucumber basil syrup and topped with Societe Brewing Co.'s Apprentice IPA. With a cocktail as refreshing as this, the Dark Side doesn’t look so bad.
Jack Sparrow and Dead Pool, The Nolen
Andrew Larson mixes up two equally mouthwatering Comic-Con-themed cocktails. Jack Sparrow is aptly Caribbean in flavor with rum, lime, passion fruit, cinnamon demerara, with a dash of absinthe. Dead Pool is deliciously representative of its name, with gin, lemon, Aperol, and apricot, with a malbec float.
Suicide Squad, Quad Alehouse and Gaslamp Tavern
Based on characters from the upcoming movie, the cocktails are colorful and eye-catching:
The Joker: Ketel One Citroen, blue curacao, cranberry, pineapple and fresh lime juice; Harley Quinn: Tanqueray gin, maraschino cherry liqueur, crème de violette and fresh lemon juice;
Dead Shot Old Fashioned: Bulleit bourbon, brown sugar, Angostura bitters, cherry and apple bitters; El Diablo Scorched Peach Margarita: Tequila Don Julio, white peach puree, lemon and lime juice, scorched agave and habanero carrot puree; Enchantress Refresher: Ketel One, fresh lime juice, sliced cucumber and fresh mint.
Star Trek Golden Anniversary Ale: For beer fans, the Gaslamp Tavern (located below Quad AleHouse) will offer this Schmaltz Brewery Comic-Con themed brew. Both restaurants will screen Comic-Con-themed movies throughout the week on all of their TV screens.
Various themed cocktails, Blund Burro
In the East Village, Baja cuisine hotspot Blind Burro mixes up five cocktails for festival goers to recharge:
Mega Margarita: Don Julio Blanco, triple sec, fresh citrus and agave. Upgrade for a Grand Marnier float.
Pop Bam Slam Mule: subs tequila for vodka in the popular drink. The Marvel-ous Paloma keeps it traditional.
The Drink That Has No Name Sangria: red wine, orange liqueur, blackberry brandy, succulent juices and fresh apples.
The Baller Margarita: Top of the line drink with Don Julio 1942, Grand Marnier and fresh lime. Garnished with a gold chain, it will run you $29.
