Comic-Con 2018: LAIKA Live’s animation activation

Nestled along the busy Fifth Avenue in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter lies a LAIKA Studios activation that transports guests to an animated world.

LAIKA Live returns with a larger exhibit and more insight behind the animation. Inside the exhibition, which is open to the general public, are props, puppets and technology used for its films, including Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Spirits and the upcoming film Missing Link.

Curators share their process on making the malleable silicon figures, including videos and live demonstrations.

The back of the exhibit gives a sneak peek at the newest film to come from LAIKA Studios, Missing Link, starring Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, and Zach Galifianakis.

The exhibit is a few blocks north of the Convention Center at 350 Fifth Ave. (between J and K streets). Merchandise is available for purchase in the LAIKA Store.

On Friday, Little Italy’s Salt & Straw will serve sweet treats in a pop-up shop at the activation. One featured flavor will be special to Coraline, with three layers that include a blue sorbet, lemon curd and a topping of mango milkshake — which will have a magical spin as you enjoy it..
