On Feb. 8, RuPaul will become the first drag performer to host ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Justin Bieber will be the musical guest.

San Diego native RuPaul will make some TV history on Saturday when the star of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” becomes the first drag performer to host “Saturday Night Live.” Justin Bieber will be the musical guest.

The “SNL” hosting spot marks yet another barrier-busting move by the frequent Emmy winner. In 2017, Entertainment Weekly put the drag icon on the cover of its LGBTQ special issue. RuPaul was also the first face of MAC’s Viva Glam cosmetics line and the first openly gay host on national TV, thanks to VH1’s “The RuPaul Show,” which ran from 1996 to 1998.

Born and raised in San Diego, RuPaul attended Crawford High School before moving to Atlanta at the age of 15. After spending years in the underground club scene, RuPaul broke into the mainstream with the 1992 disco tune “Supermodel (You Better Work),” which hit No. 45 on the Billboard charts. The award-winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race” debuted on VH1 in 2009. The show has won 13 Primetime Emmy Awards, and RuPaul has won four Emmys for hosting. The show was recently renewed for its 13th season. Its 12th season kicks off Feb. 28 on VH1.

“Saturday Night Live” airs at 11:30 p.m. on NBC.
