Rain sucks. There’s no doubt about it. But as we embark on our fourth year in a drought here in San Diego, it’s kind of necessary to put aside our selfish, sun-loving ways and embrace the cold and wet (for at least a few days.)
Remarkably, there are still ways to have fun in America’s Finest City without our pal, Mr. Sun. Click through to see some of our favorite things to do in town on a rainy day.
Play retro video games while sipping cocktails
Grab your friends and head over to either Coin-Op Game Room in North Park (3926 30th St., North Park. coinopsd.com) or Coin Haus Beer & Games in La Mesa (8361 Allison Ave., La Mesa. cohnrestaurants.com/coinhaus) to play some classic arcade games. Bonus: You can grab a big-kid drink to sip on while you beat your friends at Ms. Pacman.
Go to a luxury theater
We know going to a movie on a rainy day can get kind of repetitive, which is why we suggest indulging in a better theater experience. If you’ve yet to visit The Lot in La Jolla, it’s a must. The theater offers a full restaurant, cafe and craft cocktails to sip while you catch a flick.
7611 Fay Ave., La Jolla or 2620 Truxton Road., Liberty Station. thelotent.com
Race some cars
Have a need for speed? Get your adrenaline fix at the Miramar Speed Circuit, offering gas-powered vehicles to race on the exciting indoor track. Races are $23 each. You can also compete in a game of laser tag, located onsite, while you’re at it.

Grab a specialty coffee or tea
Rain makes us want to sip a creamy, warm concoction made special by a talented barista. We’ve been loving the comfy vibe at Lestat’s (multiple locations. lestats.com) to give us some shelter from the storm. Order a white hot chocolate, espresso Mexican mocha or one of the many other hand-crafted creations. For tea lovers, head to one of the many great tea houses around the county.
Not into coffee? Grab a beer
We could list one of the 130+ breweries to try around San Diego, but let’s be real. There are too many incredible choices to pick just one. Our advice: Find a brewery that you have yet to visit and sample a flight of tasters. Who knows, you might even find your new favorite local brew this way.
Treat yo’ self to a spa day
The Spa at Estancia Hotel in La Jolla is a great day-trip escape from the city on a rainy day. Services at the luxurious spa include targeted massages, couples packages, body treatments, waxing, manicures, pedicures and over 10 different types of facials to choose from.

There are any number of galleries and museums with fantastic offerings to make your rainy day fly by (and keep you dry). Check out the most recent openings and exhibits here.
Grab a hot bowl of noodles
There’s nothing quite like a hot bowl of soup to slurp on during a major rain storm (or any chilly winter day for that matter). If pho is your thing, here’s a list of top pho restaurants around town. If Japanese is more appealing, try any one of these essential bowls of ramen. But if you’re feeling really adventurous, here’s what you need to make a great bowl of ramen on your own.
