Curtain call: October performing arts performances

Taking the stage in San Diego this month are shows including Swan Lake, The Legend of Georgia McBride, Las Migas and Globe for All.

10.6-11.19: Smoke on the Mountain 

Down-home and up-tempo and folksy all over: Lamb's dusts off this much-revived musical about the fictional Sanders Family Singers, and gets the whole cast pickin' and strummin'.

10.11-11.12: The Legend of Georgia McBride 

An Elvis impersonator whose life is one big Heartbreak Hotel trades his pompadour for pumps and leaves everyone all shook up, in the local premiere of Matthew Lopez's new comedy.

10.13: My Favorite Murder Live 

The creators of the popular "true crime comedy" podcast hit the stage, and invite their devoted fans - affectionately known as "murderinos" - to play (or slay?) along.

10.14-22: Pirates of Penzance 

Greer Grimsley and his real-life wife, Luretta Bybee, star in the Gilbert & Sullivan favorite about an accidental swashbuckler yearning to leave the pirate life and marry the (modern) major general's daughter.

10.18-11.12: Of Mice and Men 

The John Steinbeck classic about those hard-luck wanders Lenny and George gets a fresh revival under the direction of the distinguished San Diego theater artist Richard Baird.

10.19-22: Without Walls Festival 

All the walls fall (possibly ceilings and floors, too) as the Playhouse rolls out its third celebration of site-specific theater, immersive performance and other creations that won't be contained.

10.19-11.12: Hand to God 

A renegade sock puppet named Tyrone who claims he's the devil? Totally normal. (Also, it's a comedy.) The Rep stages the local premiere of the hit Broadway play about churchgoing Texans with too much time (and felt) on their hands.

10.20-29: Terror at the Tenth 

Evil Dead - The Musical is the chipper centerpiece to this week of mayhem at the Tenth (ponchos and goggles are provided if you choose to sit in the "Splatter Zone"), but don't forget to check out the ghost tours and chill in the Evil Dead Lounge.

10.21: Las Migas 

The fearsome foursome plays flamenco and Mediterranean rhythms on violin and nylon-string guitar; they'll be joined by the dancer-singers of Flamenco Arana.

10.24: Swan Lake 

The seldom-performed Waltz of the Black Swans will be part of the show as the Russian Grand Ballet makes its second San Diego appearance with the Tchaikovsky masterwork.

10.27-28: Flashback Fall Fest 

Break out the leg warmers and trip back to the ' 80s as Moonlight throws an outdoor party to the music of Betamaxx; then fast-forward a decade for a '90s Movie Night with Hocus Pocus.

10.31-11.19: Globe for All 

The Old Globe's ever-expanding Shakespeare outreach program takes the beloved comedy Twelfth Night into veterans centers, schools, homeless shelters and more, concluding with two low-cost public performances at the Globe.
