Try to keep up with San Diego’s active duty military during this triathlon (500-meter swim, 30K bike, 5K run) or duathlon (2K run, 30K bike, 5K run) through Camp Pendleton’s rocky terrain.

See feature films, documentaries and shorts in this fifth annual festival highlighting independent filmmakers.

8/7-10: Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus Presents: Legends

Death-defying entertainers dazzle audiences with lion taming, trapeze stunts and the like, all while dodging PETA picketers.

8/7, 14, 21 & 28: Outdoor Film and Wine Series: Flicks on the Bricks
Location: Athenaeum Outdoor Patio, La Jolla

Back for its eighth year, this 21-and-up event series screens classic flicks North by Northwest, To Kill A Mockingbird, Singing in the Rain and The Thomas Crown Affair on consecutive Thursday nights in August, with a special wine pairing for each film.

See (and buy) paintings, sculptures, photography and other works by nearly 200 artists at this two-day event offering live entertainment, interactive art projects, and a beer and wine pavilion.

8/16-17: World Bodysurfing Championships
: Oceanside Pier
Admission: $50 to compete; free to watch
Watch nearly 400 bodysurfers dive into the North County waters in hopes of catching a righteous wave and the Grand Champion crown.

8/19: Taste of MainStreet
Location: Several restaurants in Encinitas
Admission: $35-$45
Sample some of the best eats, drinks and tunes Encinitas has to offer during this self-guided tour of more than 30 of the neighborhood’s restaurants, bars and live music venues.

Bike a 25-mile loop around San Diego Bay and across the Coronado Bridge and then celebrate having done so in the New Belgium beer garden at the finish line.

8/29-9/1: Festival of Sail
Location: Maritime Museum, Little Italy

Shiver your timbers with swarthy pirates, booming cannon battles and the largest tall ship festival on the west coast.

8/29-9/1: US Sand Sculpting Challenge
: B Street Cruise Ship Terminal, Downtown
Admission: $10 per day; four-day pass $18
See a dozen artists sculpt 300 tons of sand into gravity-defying sandcastles and other impressive forms. Easier-to-carry 3-D sculptures made of metal, stone and wood are also available for perusal and purchase.

Squeal with excitement for bacon- wrapped hot dogs, peanut-butter-banana-bacon-jam sandwiches and a whole lot more bacon-y goodness on International Bacon Day.

8/30-31: Swim 24Challenge
Location: Coggan Family Aquatic Complex, La Jolla; Canyonview Aquatic Complex, UCSD
Admission: $100 fundraising goal
This 24-hour event challenges relay teams to swim around the clock (each team member swims for at least one hour) to support the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation’s initiative to reduce childhood drowning.

8/30-9/1: West Coast Stickball Tournament
Location: Columbia St. and State St., Little Italy
Admission: Free
Grab a slice of pizza and cheer on San Diego’s stickball heroes as they compete against teams from New York and Puerto Rico.
