OPEN: Pop Pie Co.
University Heights is popping out pies thanks to co-owner Steven Torres and co-owner/chef Gan Suebsarakham. The brand new Pop Pie Co. brought long lines during the first week of business (officially opened as of Wednesday, Sept. 28). Individual savory and sweet pies are the main draw here, with walk-up counter service and a dog-friendly patio. The small pies with flaky, buttery crust change flavors frequently, but recent hits include steak and ale gravy and salted caramel chocolate fudge.

OPEN: Rakiraki Ramen and Pokirrito – Little Italy
The insanely popular Rakiraki Ramen and Pokirrito concepts on Convoy St. are giving fans exactly what they want: more. The second outpost of both eateries from Junya Watanabe have opened in Little Italy. The two are connected and designed by local designer Yale Jallos for an ultra-modern feel. On the Rakiraki side, expect gigantic ramen bowls and yakitori selections. Pokirrito offers customizable poke bowls and burrito-style wraps, both ideal for takeout. Watanabe plans to add new locations quickly, so stay tuned.
OPEN: Larry’s Deli
Deli sandwiches are piling up around Petco Park at the new Larry’s Deli from Azul Hospitality Group. Situated right next to the west entrance of Petco Park, Larry’s is bringing back the classics, like hot pastrami, tuna and roast turkey. The slow-cured meats used at Larry’s come from RC Provisions and the bread is all thanks to Bread & Cie. Each sandwich is served with chips and a pickle spear, plus sides such as potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans and coleslaw.

OPEN: DRIFT eat + drink
The Hyatt Regency La Jolla has a new restaurant for hotel guests and locals alike to dive into. DRIFT eat + drink arrives after a $1.8 million renovation to introduce an upscale restaurant to the La Jolla scene. On the menu, enjoy a selection of salads, small shared plates and flatbreads such as the smoked salmon flatbread. Entrée options include cauliflower casserole, SD stout-braised short ribs and roasted chicken.

OPEN: Como Ceviche!
Fresh seafood is all the rage in San Diego and for good reason. A new fast-casual eatery dubbed Como Ceviche! is now open in East Village, offering authentic ceviche dishes inspired by recipes from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Chile. The raw, locally sourced fish menu also includes bowls, salads and wraps. The concept comes from Johan Engman (of Fig Tree Cafes and Breakfast Republic) and William Lopez (of Alternative Strategies).

Restaurateur John Resnick has debuted a new dining gem in Carlsbad called Campfire. The concept is simple: dedicating the menu to the art of live fire cooking by executive chef Andrew Bachelier, with dishes such as duck liver pâte and leg of lamb with sea island red pea, lettuce, goat milk and pistachio. The communal dining experience is designed by Bells and Whistles to create a whimsical camping ambiance. Cocktails by industry leader Leigh Lecap play with this outdoorsy concept, such as the roasted corn cocktail with tequila, charcoal, lime and salt.

OPEN: Knotty Brewing Co.
Knotty Barrel Gastropub just got a whole lot bigger. Two weeks ago, the East Village bar showcased the debut of Knotty Brewing Co., a tasting room and brewery located adjacent to the bar. In the former Valentines Mexican Food space, the five-barrel brewhouse includes a glass wall for guests to watch the brewing process take place. The parking lot has also been transformed into Knotty’s Backyard, a pet-friendly outdoor patio complete with its own bar and cornhole court.
